Biofuels Cause 75% Increase In Food Prices

You think biofuels are a good thing? Think again:

Biofuels have forced global food prices up by 75% - far more than previously estimated - according to a confidential World Bank report obtained by the Guardian.

The news comes at a critical point in the world's negotiations on biofuels policy. Leaders of the G8 industrialised countries meet next week in Hokkaido, Japan, where they will discuss the food crisis and come under intense lobbying from campaigners calling for a moratorium on the use of plant-derived fuels.

"Political leaders seem intent on suppressing and ignoring the strong evidence that biofuels are a major factor in recent food price rises," said Robert Bailey, policy adviser at Oxfam. "It is imperative that we have the full picture. While politicians concentrate on keeping industry lobbies happy, people in poor countries cannot afford enough to eat."

Fossil fuels cause global warming, biofuels cause famine, horse manure causes greenhouse gasses. Maybe we should just walk?

The Gluttonous Frog (A.K.A. The Pacman Frog)

Meet the Amazon Horned Frog. The first thing that stands out about it is its size. The frog can grow to 8 inches (20 centimeters) in length and weigh in at up to 1 lb (480 g). How does it get that big, you ask? By eating with quantity, not quality in mind. Sometimes they go to far.

Typical ambush predators, they squeeze their bodies into the forest substrate or leaf litter so only their heads protrude. When anything smaller than their own bodies happens by, they spring from the mud and swallow their prey whole, locking it in their jaws with their sharp teeth.

Some Horned Frogs have been found dead in the wild with the remains of an impossible-to-ingest victim still protruding from their mouths. Their ravenous appetite and huge mouths have earned them and other horned frogs the pet-trade nickname "Pac Man frogs."

Gluttony. A deadly sin indeed.
